Help Armley have the friendliest street in Britain as voted for by the listeners of Radio Five Live

Amidst these turbulent times of fighting the DONE bookmakers attempts to colonise all of Armley Town Street, Jam Siren is pleased to share some good warm hearted news with you to finish the year on.
What will we do next on this street of publicity seeking extroverts? The Lady Mayoress implores the good citizans of Leeds and Armley to help us win the accolade next Friday 29th by listening into Radio 5 Live from 11am on 909 or 693 Medium Wave (AM?) (just like the good old times) where we fight it out against the likes of Manchester and London to win the very special award!

Alan Bennett would be so proud of us! Maybe then he will see that being patron of the Armley Tourist Board would enhance his profile no end!

In the meantime dear subscribers the Armley Tourist Board would like to thank you for all your support in 2006, we hope you enjoyed Jam Up the Back Passage: The Second Coming, and the Tea Dances, The Charming Armley Calendar and numerous other activities.
2007 we will launch the new website, where the Lady Mayoress devolves her power to YOU!
Yes a community website where you write the content and say what you want! There are plans for a farmers market in Charlie Cake Park for May too, so lots to look forward to!

Get listening and voting next Friday, let's show the world the Armley is the friendliest place in the world!

Happy Christmas and a sparkling New Year!

Is it a Done Deal? Please read and save Armley Town Street!

So what was Todd's butchers has planning permission to be extended as BETFRED's DONE Bookies
Just what Armley needs! We have until the 22nd December to send in our complaints if we don't wish to see one prime piece of Armley promise turned into another gambling den. Coral also have planning permission to open a shop on Armley Town Street, maybe where the sadly departed JnR Thai was. (apparently no 19 wherever that may be). Sadly bookies, gaming rooms and charity shops seem to be the most flourishing business in Armley and much as we are against middle class gentrification it would be a shame if a profit making bookie takes Todd's as they will never leave!

The Address to send your letters etc to is Betting Gaming and Liscening at The Court House in Leeds see below. jamsiren@thearmleytouristboard.com

Please forward this to everyone who you know with an interest in Armley. Do we know any legal people who can help us with this.....Apparently there aren't many proposals from bookmakers get thrown out, they have money to throw at this. Done's has a strong case and are unlikely to be opposed by another bookmakers because they are already in Armley and can demonstrate demand. Our best case is when another book makers complains as they will get their legal team behind it. We spoke to a legal clerk at the Magistrates who said we stood a better chance of opposing the new Coral plans as William Hill have aleady opposed it.

Anyway perhaps it is just me, we would need to send in 2 objections sent in we can state we think it kills high street shopping and is not suitable for children, but are chances are v. slim indeed. The next part would be that if we were the only complainants to go to the hearing on the 11th January, any complainant receives notice of this anyway. If another betting firm has opposed it then there is little point going to the first hearing as it will only be ajourned and then a new hearing date set. So on our letters we can say that we would not need to attend the first hearing if there were other complainants from the betting community.
We need to send two copies of the same letter each for legal reasons.

Glittering Gathering at He- re Estate Agents reward wonderful entrants and announce winners!

The Lady Mayoress of Armley got dressed up to the 9's last night at the joint launch of the Charming Armley Calendar and He-re Estate Agents.

The Lady M thanked all that made it such a wonderful success and urges those of you not able to go last night to get along to He-re as the wonderful images decorate the wall most professionally. We enjoyed full security and red carpet treatment from one of our sponsors; Network Securites to make sure that our guests were well looked after. Matt the chef did amazing things with prawns, sushi and other canapes from a
kitchen the size of a toilet. ALL HAIL! With any luck he might open a restuarant in Armley and we will all be very happy if that happens!

After much Country Manor was consumed (and some nice posh bubbly stuff) the Lady M left the party (which went on until 4.30 apparently) to get along to the BBC for a radio appearance with Andrew and Georgie at the BBC in Leeds. (7am- very painful) Jam Siren was very impressed by the fact that she managed to use the word ephemera (what ever that means!) so early in the day. Click on this link to hear the short broadcast

Further great news:
A new recording studio has opened in Armley on Canal Road, it is called 'The Rock and Roll Circus' and sounds fabtastic (sorry that's so cheesy of me) anyway to read more about it go to our news section which contains details of how to get in contact with the owner Craig Pennington of Leeds Band 'A Love Supreme' Armley News Round up

And finally this Saturday 2nd December we will be driving around Armley tommorow selling the calendar from the back of a white van. Mr Rusty Staples and Angie from the Marvellous Armley Tea Dance will be helping us spread the word. The Lady Mayoress is ever so taken with them, such hard workers and so full of spunky spirit! So you can get your pennies ready and if you are quick demand delivery to the door!

Otherwise buy it on Ebay, (charming armley calendar) at He-re until the 17th or at the Marvellous Armley Tea Dance on the 9th December.
