Ex Pats lost finding their way back to Armley News

Noticing the drop off from new visitors from foreign parts- apart from those in China who send all sorts of incomprehensible and quite pointless emails to Jam Siren, we went investigating!
We discovered that the link from Wikipedia has been removed (we did not put it there in the first place!) due to it being perceived as advertising!

We have kept new visitors from abroad abreast of Armley news, such as Diane in Florida, who found us when she searched for Armley in Wikipedia. I think Luke (who ever he is) needs to be aware that The Armley Tourist Board is a not for profit, and certainly for community spirit expression of civic pride.

We appeal to Luke to stop being snippy, he should be proud to include the quirky- history in the making if you like. (As all of our Leeds and global commentaries could be considered so really!) If you would like to reinstate this link, who ever you were in the first place then please do!

Message from the XLadyMayoress

My dearest readers, thank you for stopping by, it's a wonder you still do given Jam Siren's outpouring of grief into your ears recently. I don't know, I go away on a lovely cruise to Madeira, leaving all communications to Jam Siren, expecting her to continue her saucy ways the little devil, and come back to all sorts of serious and downbeat tales of woe.

Well Jam Siren has now been given the opportunity to wear her heart on her sleeve on our affiliated websites, Creative Armley and Armley Town Street. She'll 'do good' and be earnest over there! She tells me that she still wants to keep the sense of humour that you know and love us for, but I fear Jammy is getting a little too dull really, and therefore I have come back to reinject a sense of cosy afternoon sherry into the feel of the site.

That's right, and what better way to do that than for you to sit back, have a tipple with me and enjoy the first of our 'Five minute quickies'

I have to say this first group are rather rascally, and I do feel a little bit worried that in the tradition of all up and coming bands they are a little lacking in social etiquette, but dear readers I leave that for you to decide. In fact their soon to be pick of the hit parade 'Blah Blah Blah' does remind me of Mr Mayor's attitude when I regale him with the wonderful stories of the garden tea parties at Dame Bab's.

Middleman, apart from being feted by Radio One, (and a sure fire hit with their catchy song- I think it was called something deep like Mass Market Wigwams before Blah etc) are a four piece band of four fresh faced boys, who despite their rather cheeky answers are actually lovely boys that you would be glad your daughter brought home to you. All they need is a little bit of talcum powder and a bit of feeding up. I have to say they always look so handsome at the Armley Tea Dances. Anyway I'm getting all unnecesarry, If you have any questions for the boys you will have to now contact them through their management- what oh! (charlie@city-rockers.com)

So without further ado may I present;

MIDDLEMAN
(Visit their websites www.middlemanpop.co.uk and www.myspace.com/middlemanpop and Channel 4 no less! Get along to their events and show some Armley LOVE!)

What is your favourite smell: Poo
Who is your Armley IDOL: Dani T
Who is the biggest rascal in your band and why?: Lee cus he's like danny devito.
What kind of drunk do you get (happy, psychotic etc?: Both
Will fame go to your heads?: OOOOHHHH YEEAAHHH!!!
If Middleman were a sandwich what kind of sandwich would you be?: JERK CHICKEN
What kind of groupies do you have (other than the Lady M): Mostly animals and some objects.
What kind of animals do you think you were in previous lives?: Hip hop groupies.
What bit of Armley makes you giggle?: The Prison
Do you think you have any children knocking about?: No but krish's sister does.
What has been the best thing that has happened to you this year so far?: Maida Vale session on Radio1
What are you hoping the future brings for your band?: Chart hits
Could you tell the Lady M who you would like to find out more about in Armley? The Horse on the field
Why should anyone come and live in Armley? Because they're skint.

Question dear reader, do they deserve to be granted the freedom of Armley for 24 hours?
Who would you like for your next 5 minute quickie?

Coming to your Town Street: A Prime Tripled Fronted Betting Office to enjoy spending your hard earned lucre in.

There was hand wringing, furrowed brows, sadness and despair around the large board table at Leeds Civic Hall yesterday. In fact there were tears in the eyes of the dear councillors and planning officers as they sealed the fate of Armley Town Street and helped hasten it's decline to a ghost town.
The vote of 7 for the application and 4 against (Cllr Harper was against and made a heroic speech against the application) was a reluctant lEGAL one- (if spineless in our humble opinion), as to refuse permission would be 'perverse'!

So despite arguments that this would impact the vitality and viability of our once great town street, (which according to some of the aged representatives, it really had been a shopping destination of some renown) the plain fact of the matter was that the applicant satisfied all 'material planning' concerns in changing the use of Todd's from a retail outlet to a service outlet.
This was despite the 'site visit' of cllrs and planning officers who walked along Town Street, noticing the empty units, and 'fringe' retail such as charity shops, the quantity of which signal a street in decline. (The planning department had searched high and low to find a loop hole in the unitary development plan for Leeds and Armley and national policy but could not find a good legal reason to turn down this application)

In the past few days the Lady Mayoress has learned more about planning than was her want, but the sad facts stand that the plans for Armley cannot influence the type of 'service outlet' off the main parade. On the bit which is Somerfield etc that is considered the primary frontage and has to be 80% retail and 20% service, Todd's is considered to be in the 'secondary' frontage and therefore more service is permitted along that strip.

It was put to the panel that bookies actually prove that they increase footfall! Hmmm, we would like to know does increased footfall result in increased spending elsewhere? Well ofcourse it must cos every punter who uses a book makers comes out richer than when they went it surely... and step out with a spring in their steps to spend their loot in the restuarants, cafes, clothing shops etc that line Town Street. How curmudgeonly of the Armley Tourist Board to have tried to stop the spread of this prosperity!

So thanks to all of you who took the time to sign petitions etc, there is a hearing at the magistrates court for their licence application, but we feel quite deflated at the prospects of this being rejected, as asked many times before if any of you have any knowledge that could help stop this then please do something if you care.

A big thanks to Maria from He-re who trod the streets with a petition, who really heard what the young and old of Armley thought about this, and yesterday made a very good 3 minute speech asking 'how does granting this application fit with plans for regeneration in Armley?' The answer was a resounding 'bog off to regeneration as we are toothless in the face of an expensive appeal which would cost YOU the council tax payers as we would lose'

Apparently we lucky Armleyites can still look forward to some lovely cash being spent on tarting up Armley Town Street later in the year, not sure how new railings and the like are going to hide the fact of decorating a corpse with jewells though.

The Lady Mayoress knows that you care, but wants to leave this thought with you.
If you care enough about Armley, please don't keep it to yourself. Over on the grown up sister blog www.armleytownstreet.blogspot.com we are going to keep fanning the flames for change. We feel depressed at what has happened and what this might mean for Armley, but perhaps the time is right to capitalise upon the strength of feeling we are witnessing amongst our residents. What were the chain of events in other run down areas that resulted in them picking themseleves up and flourishing. Do we need to form a development trust? WHAT CAN WE DO?

Your community SOAPBOX

We have set up a very grown up blog space called ArmleyTownStreet.
If there is anything anybody wants to get on their soapbox about then you too can contribute,

The first soapbox is about the future of Armley Town Street, and asks for anyone who gives a thingeymyjig about our Armley to ACTIVELY get involved. Identify yourselves, tell people what you want. This site is still but young, but all reports we get show that visitor numbers are growing and putting 'What's it like to live in Armley' 'What is there to do in Armley' 'Armley Regeneration' in the google search engines. We know there are loads of you already contributing in many ways, but let's use this space to communicate it to those who don't know and might like to get a sense of what is happening to make a difference.

Obviously if this is all waffle and you just want the daft tongue in cheekiness stick with this site. If you want some community collective action lets start talking about it together on the ArmleyTownStreet blog. Click here to read: http://armleytownstreet.blogspot.com/ or email jamsiren@thearmleytouristboard.com if you want to have your own login to the site and start publishing.

Call for old and young to attend next weeks ANTI GAMBLING planning Meeting in Leeds
If you read the following start at page 148. They seem to think we have a lost cause, even though John Battle's post bag has been bulging at the seams and we got well over 300 signatures. The planning report focuses on the fact that we are objecting on moral and ideaological grounds, neatly ignoring the fact that we are campaigning about regeneration and future sustainability. If anyone has any useful FACTS about how bookies etc do not contribute to the long term growth of an area please send them to us. CLICK HERE TO READ DOC

Oh God lord, look what has been unleashed by your support, the current X Lady M issues new edict on drink guzzling locally

" Word reaches me that the hostelry on the junction of Armley Ridge Road and Town Street, named the Barley Corn Public House, now serves the ale of choice of Lady Madonna of Chicago City. That's right along with 2 other hand pulled cask ales Timothy Taylor is now served for the good citizens of Armley and beyond. So show your support by getting along and supping it. The Lady M and other folk from St Ives Town Hall will be inspecting for evidence of Westons Organic, Country Manor, and pickled eggs, we shall report back as to our findings"

May we also extend a warm welcome to a new neighbour in our community who has come back to her home town from the dirty old smoke, and by the looks of things may be a real asset to our neighbourhood.

The X Lady M of Armley has been very hermit-like these last weeks

Jam Siren has been quite concerned about her mental state, as she has been laying off the Country Manor, keeping her nose out of her neighbour's concerns and generally moping around.
In fact since she dramatically announced her intention to step down the ex Lady M has lost some of that 'sparkle' that made her so profoundly irritating. Jam Siren has been at quite a loss as to what to do to bring back the interfering old boot, and thinks perhaps the best thing would be to put it to you that maybe Lady Mayoress should step back into her old patent buckled shoes; what dear public do you say?

She has intimated to me that since watching the film 'Hot Fuzz' she has some new grand schemes about how she may keep up the campaign of making Armley the BEST PLACE ON EARTH to live. Not having seen the film myself I do not know what she means when she mutters darkly 'Sometimes the means will justify the ends' and 'It's all for the greater good'

Still she was also heartened last week by two events, one being the fact that our postcode is now at last coming into it's own and receiving wonderful unsolicited junk mail from Organic food producers, which makes up for the ignorance of those marketeers sending along those awful 29% unsecured loan offers. What's more rumour has it that what was 'Armley Plumbing Supplies' in Upper Armley may soon be turned into a wonderful place for coffees and gossip galore!

Furthermore she had a boost by being mentioned by a rather dashing young man from a legal firm with a lovely Leeds office on his corporate website. Addleshaw Goddard are going to be helping the young of Armley with their reading skills, so hopefully more of the little tykes will be able to read this website and become proper citizens of Armley. Read the piece by clicking here

For the civic minded amongst us, good(ish) news that Todd's has been granted a small stay of execution until April thanks to all your support! Still much work to be done though and we will keep you appraised of any news. With over 300 signitures online and on paper we have given the town planners some food for thought. So all we need now is a serious contender to ring those agents in Leeds - Adair Paxton and make a serious offer on Todd's to the owner, who must by now be wondering if they backed the wrong horse!

Finally the Valentine's Tea Dance made us cry with pride! It was sublime. More pictures to follow.

So what say we with regards the sad ole lady; shall we have her back or shall we get someone else to do the job?

Urgent help required!
We have 260 signatures from both the online petition and from the hard work Maria has put in walking around the streets. The feedback has been that our community has no desire to see a prime double fronted shop turned into a bookies.
However whilst we have been concentrating on stopping a licence being granted by the magistrate's we all totally missed the planning notice further down the road which expired on the 30th January. We contacted the council planners and they said we could have until the end of the week to make our voices and views heard. So please go online to object by clicking here
and send letters to: Mrs Hare

Apparently the planning committee is more likely to take the emotive views of the community in an area earmarked for regeneration than the magistrate's, where unless we can prove lack of demand our chances are slim with out legal representation.

Please forward this on to all those concerned.

Watch this space for some more interesting news coming shortly about fun things!

A St Ives Neighbour wrote the following in response..............

Eh Bah Gum! Aint it grand up North? Just nipped out to get paper and nearly slipped on the twinkling cobbles, but luckily my handsome kindly neighbour were on hand to catch my fall! As he helped me back on to my feet a friendly little teenager wearing a hood type garment, came skipping down road, miraculously zit free, bright eyed and bushy tailed. 'Morning Maam' said he cheerily, would you like me to get owt from the shops for you? How about I use your key and let meself back into your house, and put breakfast on for ye whilst I am at it?
I smiled broadly ' hello young Dwaine how are you? how is the studying going? Is uncle Albie on the mend yet, how did the special herbal medicine I mixed for him from my little pretty but well tended yard work?'
He lent into me and grinned, 'don't you worry about Uncle Albie, he's fit as a fiddle thanks to all the wonderful neighbours who helped him after he put his back out jamming up the back passage'
I looked at my watch, ' Oh Golly, I must dash; parties to organise, neighbours to check in on, cats to feed, hanging baskets to water, bats to save, councillors to schmooze, papers to burn, radio shows to amuse, Fern and Phillip to visit, keys to cut, no time to waste!'
And off I gambled in my best frock. Until I got just one house up the road.....' Coffee Love?'
'Oh go on then, if you must....

Next news item will be about the wonderful Armley Forum! Please don't unsubscribe in the meantime!

Monday, January 15, 2007

Come to the Armley Forum Tuesday 16th 7pm if you want to get involved with opposing the Done Bookies Application
Last week due to your deluge of letters in objection, the application has been adjourned until the 20th February so well done!
The Forum at the One Stop Shop will deal with all sorts of other Armley related stuff, but this can be covered in the any other business bit at the end. Perhaps one of the things we might need to consider is what can we do/say to counter the argument that Town Street is already full of empty shops, which is better an empty shop or a bookies? What could Todd's be anyway? So instead of a good ole gripe, why dont we find out how we can influence the future of Armley, and what would we want to see anyway? Why not take a butchers at what the folk in Headingley did so they could work collectively click here

Further more the Coral Application which was opposed on the grounds of lack of demand by William Hill has been adjourned until April, I am sure we will have a good opportunity to discuss this tomorrow too.

Our resident genius and great artist/musician would like to see some Armley love and invites you to see him perform at the Wardrobe in Leeds this Wednesday 9pm click here to read more

Finally in the Guardian this time for friendliest street. We now promise this will all stop!
Enough already of this media circus made up by the delusional ex Lady Mayoress- dont the silly readers know it is all part of a grand hoax and the street and it's residents dont exist except as characters in her made up world. Next people will think that there really is a tourist board and will even 'vote' for the next pretend Lady Mayoress.

New Year Round Up: THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY!

Happy New Year loyal subjects, we apologise here at St Ives Towers for the long delay in extending our welcome to you but there has been a bit of a shock following some wonderful news!

The Good.............
1) The Lady Mayoress of Armley announced on the eve of New Years that she would be stepping down from her onerous duties to become chief communications officer, and the search is now on for the next Mayor or Lady Mayoress of Armley (in a totally unofficial capacity we stress!)
We do have a couple of candidates but will be posting these and your entries over the coming weeks hoping to make an announcement for the end of January. Would you like to take on the role and wear the diamonte encrusted crown jewel chains with pride at whatever spurious event takes your fancy? Email your picture (can be made up) details and a short piece on why you should get the vote, and at the end of Jan we will have a lovely public vote! jamsiren@thearmleytouristboard.com

2)Naturally St Ives Mount won the rather wonderful accolade of 'Friendliest Street in Britain' as voted for by the listeners of Radio 5 Live! What impeccable taste they have all 56% of them. To listen to the ex Lady Mayoress and her saucy talk with Richard Bacon click the following link........RADIO FIVE

3) Many Calendars gone to good homes, still a few left, anyone want any? Just email jamsiren@thearmleytouristboard.com

4) For those following the fortunes of the ex Lady Mayoress's old trusty stead Sherman have a butchers at the following pictures of the little devils latest incarnation! (Note the number plate- The ex Lady Mayoress had to stifle a sob!)

5) We have a holding page for the new website which we are currently developing which will be a total community resource for YOU! To post news, share stuff, reject planning permissions, rate suppliers etc. Admittedly it is not ready just yet, but will be soon, so keep your eyes peeled!
www.thearmleytouristboard.com

The BAD

Todd's Pork and Beef Butchers....... 5 letters were sent to object to the proposed development by Done Book makers and there is a hearing at Leeds Magistrates Court on the 11th January. We will post news of next actions, but definitely get to the next Armley Forum on Tuesday 16th at 6pm if you want to air your views and work out how we can take action.
Check out the article in the YEP by clicking HERE

The UGLY
Okay so you think Sherman should have been in this section but let the ex Lady M have her last moments of power, 2007 promises to be different, and Jam Siren promises that whoever shall take the reigns of power next she will serve them faithfully too, but please whoever you are, lay off the Country Manor Perry and please don't abuse the privelege bestowed upon you. I say no more (but if you buy the drinks she might be persuaded to divulge!)

Many of our wheelie bins from our St Ives have been stolen many times over the last couple of months to make fires on the wreck, not too friendly is it?
Recently a good neighbour had his car window stoved in.

Help Armley have the friendliest street in Britain as voted for by the listeners of Radio Five Live

Amidst these turbulent times of fighting the DONE bookmakers attempts to colonise all of Armley Town Street, Jam Siren is pleased to share some good warm hearted news with you to finish the year on.
What will we do next on this street of publicity seeking extroverts? The Lady Mayoress implores the good citizans of Leeds and Armley to help us win the accolade next Friday 29th by listening into Radio 5 Live from 11am on 909 or 693 Medium Wave (AM?) (just like the good old times) where we fight it out against the likes of Manchester and London to win the very special award!

Alan Bennett would be so proud of us! Maybe then he will see that being patron of the Armley Tourist Board would enhance his profile no end!

In the meantime dear subscribers the Armley Tourist Board would like to thank you for all your support in 2006, we hope you enjoyed Jam Up the Back Passage: The Second Coming, and the Tea Dances, The Charming Armley Calendar and numerous other activities.
2007 we will launch the new website, where the Lady Mayoress devolves her power to YOU!
Yes a community website where you write the content and say what you want! There are plans for a farmers market in Charlie Cake Park for May too, so lots to look forward to!

Get listening and voting next Friday, let's show the world the Armley is the friendliest place in the world!

Happy Christmas and a sparkling New Year!

Jam Siren on behalf of the Lady Mayoress of Armley and the Armley Tourist Board

Is it a Done Deal? Please read and save Armley Town Street!

So what was Todd's butchers has planning permission to be extended as BETFRED's DONE Bookies
Just what Armley needs! We have until the 22nd December to send in our complaints if we don't wish to see one prime piece of Armley promise turned into another gambling den. Coral also have planning permission to open a shop on Armley Town Street, maybe where the sadly departed JnR Thai was. (apparently no 19 wherever that may be). Sadly bookies, gaming rooms and charity shops seem to be the most flourishing business in Armley and much as we are against middle class gentrification it would be a shame if a profit making bookie takes Todd's as they will never leave!

The Address to send your letters etc to is Betting Gaming and Liscening at The Court House in Leeds see below. jamsiren@thearmleytouristboard.com

Please forward this to everyone who you know with an interest in Armley. Do we know any legal people who can help us with this.....Apparently there aren't many proposals from bookmakers get thrown out, they have money to throw at this. Done's has a strong case and are unlikely to be opposed by another bookmakers because they are already in Armley and can demonstrate demand. Our best case is when another book makers complains as they will get their legal team behind it. We spoke to a legal clerk at the Magistrates who said we stood a better chance of opposing the new Coral plans as William Hill have aleady opposed it.

Anyway perhaps it is just me, we would need to send in 2 objections sent in we can state we think it kills high street shopping and is not suitable for children, but are chances are v. slim indeed. The next part would be that if we were the only complainants to go to the hearing on the 11th January, any complainant receives notice of this anyway. If another betting firm has opposed it then there is little point going to the first hearing as it will only be ajourned and then a new hearing date set. So on our letters we can say that we would not need to attend the first hearing if there were other complainants from the betting community.
We need to send two copies of the same letter each for legal reasons.

Glittering Gathering at He- re Estate Agents reward wonderful entrants and announce winners!

The Lady Mayoress of Armley got dressed up to the 9's last night at the joint launch of the Charming Armley Calendar and He-re Estate Agents.

The Lady M thanked all that made it such a wonderful success and urges those of you not able to go last night to get along to He-re as the wonderful images decorate the wall most professionally. We enjoyed full security and red carpet treatment from one of our sponsors; Network Securites to make sure that our guests were well looked after. Matt the chef did amazing things with prawns, sushi and other canapes from a
kitchen the size of a toilet. ALL HAIL! With any luck he might open a restuarant in Armley and we will all be very happy if that happens!

After much Country Manor was consumed (and some nice posh bubbly stuff) the Lady M left the party (which went on until 4.30 apparently) to get along to the BBC for a radio appearance with Andrew and Georgie at the BBC in Leeds. (7am- very painful) Jam Siren was very impressed by the fact that she managed to use the word ephemera (what ever that means!) so early in the day. Click on this link to hear the short broadcast

Further great news:
A new recording studio has opened in Armley on Canal Road, it is called 'The Rock and Roll Circus' and sounds fabtastic (sorry that's so cheesy of me) anyway to read more about it go to our news section which contains details of how to get in contact with the owner Craig Pennington of Leeds Band 'A Love Supreme' Armley News Round up

And finally this Saturday 2nd December we will be driving around Armley tommorow selling the calendar from the back of a white van. Mr Rusty Staples and Angie from the Marvellous Armley Tea Dance will be helping us spread the word. The Lady Mayoress is ever so taken with them, such hard workers and so full of spunky spirit! So you can get your pennies ready and if you are quick demand delivery to the door!

Otherwise buy it on Ebay, (charming armley calendar) at He-re until the 17th or at the Marvellous Armley Tea Dance on the 9th December.
